The Basic Science of NMN

NMN+to+NAD.jpg

NMN stands for β-nicotinamide mononucleotide which is a chemical that exists in all cells of human body tissues and also lots of plants, such as broccoli, cabbage, avocado, etc.

NMN is a very important precursor of coenzyme I (NAD+) in that the cells in our body use NMN to make NAD+. NDA+ plays an essential role in our body for converting the food into energy and participating many other important biological functions, such as DNA repair and cell revitalization, that are directly related to our overall health.

Chemically, NMN belongs to vitamin B3 which is a group of natural chemical compounds called niacin. These niacins include NA, NAM(nicotinamide), NR, and their derivatives, such as NMN. Niacins are all NAD+ precursors that can be converted into NAD+ through various biological pathways in human cells as shown on the left. Among all these NAD+ precursors, NMN is relatively more efficient to be convert to NAD+.

However, the level of NAD+ in human body decreased dramatically when people get older. The decrease of NAD+ with aging causes cell malfunctions and has direct impact on many age-related health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, memory, eye function, etc. A lot of scientific researches during past few decade have confirmed that NMN intake can increase NAD+ levels and rejuvenate cell functions of aging animals. For more details of scientific researches on NMN and anti-aging, please see the section at the last section of this page “The Scientific Evolution of NMN” and our blog on human longevity.

Besides taking NAD booster supplements, scientific researches also confirmed that exercise and healthy diet can help increase NAD+ levels to a certain degree in our body. Maintaining a healthy level of NAD+ is essential for the biological functions of various organs in our body as shown on the right picture.

NAD+ itself has low bioavailability and generally is not an efficient way to booster NAD+ in human body by orally taking NAD+ supplements.

The Scientific Evolution of NMN

What is NMN?

There are numerous reviews on the scientific background of NMN. However, the following website link gives an excellent writing that perfectly summarizes this subject: https://www.nmn.com/precursors/what-is-nmn.

Strongly recommend to subscribe this website also to see the historically significant scientific researches on NMN and also the most recent breakthrough update: www.nmn.com, a website that solely dedicates to the scientific progress of NMN and related human longevity studies.

Human clinical trials: so far most of the studies of biological functions of NMN are on animal. A handful of human clinicals trials including ours are either complete or ongoing. A nice summary of all the studies can be found by the following link: https://www.nmn.com/clinical-trials. Our human clinical trial has been complete and the results will be reported in scientific journals soon. The details of our human clinical trial can be accessed through the following link: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04823260?term=nmn&draw=2
